For the last 20 years our Memorhyme members have worked, performed and toured at festivals, community centres, schools, prisons and theatres around the world whilst representing our home city of Birmingham. Originating from Warwick University and claiming The Drum Arts Centre Aston as their creative hub base, The New October Poets toured the UK with their spoken word theatrical shows. From this, a progression was made to ‘Colour Free Visions Theatre’ who specifically focused on the education arena. ‘Write Down Speak Up’ was formed to work alongside the public and private sector which subsequently gave birth to our latest streamlined venture, Memorhyme.
Our Key Stage 3 (ages 12 - 14) workshops promote pro-social literacy skills and inclusive language modelling with whole year groups exploring different themes. Year 7's explore the fine line of 'Bullying Vs Banter', Year 8's explore de-escalation, mis-characterisation and the power of forgiveness with 'Forbid and Forgive', Year 9's share positive life lessons and tips for school with 'Words of Wisdom'.
There are two options for delivery. 720 pupils (up to 240 pupils per year group) engaged in one day of 3 rolling assemblies for Year 7, 8 and 9.
Or 240 pupils (one year group) engaged in a day, with 80 pupils in each assembly, more in depth with more writing and performance focus on the year group's theme.
Each assembly begins with a fun introduction, a positive freestyle poem with pupils' names, pupils' skills assessment, contextualisation of the theme, written task, spoken word challenge and a closing showcase performance of original poems written by pupils on the day alongside laminated poems for pupils and staff.
How to book:
Our poetry format has four core foundations: 'Engage, Page, Stage & Digital Age'. 'Engage' is where our facilitator visits your school to deliver a fun session that launches the 'Page' writing and 'Stage' performance process. Schools are invited to produce a video of their best performance which can be shared with us to enter our 'Digital Age' showcase in July. Content will be used to promote pupil voice across a number of themes whilst building a digital legacy of content year on year.
