Introduction

For the last 20 years our Memorhyme members have worked, performed and toured at festivals, community centres, schools, prisons and theatres around the world whilst representing our home city of Birmingham. Originating from Warwick University and claiming The Drum Arts Centre Aston as their creative hub base, The New October Poets toured the UK with their spoken word theatrical shows. From this, a progression was made to ‘Colour Free Visions Theatre’ who specifically focused on the education arena. ‘Write Down Speak Up’ was formed to work alongside the public and private sector which subsequently gave birth to our latest streamlined venture, Memorhyme.

KS2 (Key Stage Two)

We offer a full day poetry workshop with years 3, 4, 5 and 6 on Values, Virtues and Character literacy along with teaching resources to help increase children's literacy confidence and curricular engagement. The Key Stage 2 format is for Single, two or three-form entry schools (120 - 360 pupils) to help: safeguard and celebrate positive language and character traits, promote pupil voice and offer a unique curricular experience to enrich pupils' cultural capital. Our full day format begins with a high energy Key Stage 2 literacy assembly to engage and inspire all four year groups with rhythm and rhyme. Afterwards pupils and teachers return to classes equipped with creative ideas and resources to complete the task of bringing their poetic words to life, using: beatboxing, drama, props, posters, music, dance, and background animations. Each class prepares a 90 second performance ready to showcase during the final hour of the day, in a Key Stage 2 celebration of positive vocabulary, a Values, Virtues and Character Poetry Slam!

Our format has four core phases: 'Engage, Page, Stage & Digital Age'. With a fun launch assembly we Engage, pupils choose rhyming words and poems for the Page, then creatively perform them for the Stage and produce a video for the Digital Age. The four phases offer positive literacy, speaking and listening outcomes for pupils with a digital output - a poetry video that can promote values literacy across your school's digital platforms. Share your video with us to join our Key Stage 2 annual digital Values Virtues and Character showcase anthology each July.

How To Book

  1. Confirm date/s, session content and timings with our team.
  2. Teachers access the presentation resource that we produce on Google Slides for your school, which includes: our facilitator's presentation and teachers' toolkit of editable click and play resources for extended learning
  3. Watch our short pre-visit video and scroll through the Google Slides resource ahead of our visit to help your class/team score top points in the showcase!
  4. Confirm IT requirements which includes: microphone, sound/speakers, laptop connected to large screen/projector, laptop must have internet connection with Google access (ready for our facilitator to run the assembly presentation).
  5. We ask that a register of pupil's names for each class is provided upon our arrival, with a discreet dot/asterisk next to names of pupils considered: hard to reach, disruptive or low esteemed. Registers are used by our artists as a tool of engagement to begin the assembly in fun way, esteeming pupils in a positive 'freestyle' poem that includes their names (registers are returned to staff immediately afterwards).

In addition to the Values, Virtues and Character Poetry Slam vocabulary workshop we also offer:

  • Animated digital reward certificates for pupils who demonstrate your school values, for example: 'Kindness' or 'Respect'. We have a range of editable templates to swiftly create certificates on any values theme. Staff can also record positive comments for a nominated pupil, who can listen to positive staff comments at any point in the future. A means of positive reinforcement inspired by the South African philosophy of Ubuntu, where affirming messages remind pupils of their positive traits should they forget themselves and misbehave (often seen as a cry for help or cognitive dissonance). We offer certificate CPD training enabling staff to produce these certificates at will.
  • An incentivising digital rewards and awards system for your school. Each pupil collects values or character virtues behaviour badges, pupils with the highest number of rewards are acknowledged and celebrated further with in-house school awards event in July. We can train staff to produce the award system and digital certificates in-house.
